Professional Development — RAPS® Intervention Training

Course Description

The R.A.P.S. Intervention training course covers current reading research, phonological awareness, formation of consonant and vowel sounds, as well as direct, systematic, sequential instruction in the structure of the English language. The six syllable types, syllable division formulas, common prefixes and suffixes, and spelling rules complete the instruction.  Assessment and progress monitoring are discussed. The role of fluency and embedded vocabulary and comprehension strategies in instruction are also discussed.
 
As a result of this training, Educators will:
• Understand the processing systems and subskills involved in reading
• Review and practice phonological awareness activities
• Feel and chain consonant and vowel sounds
• Master graphemes for reading and spelling
• Learn the six syllable types that provide the foundation for the English language
• Create a discovery lesson for the introduction of letter patterns and spelling
   expectancies
• Learn the most common prefixes, suffixes, and roots
• Learn spelling rules for adding suffixes to base words
• Prepare a lesson plan for the introduction of a new grapheme
• Deliver a lesson for the introduction of a new grapheme
 
Follow-up coaching, mentoring, and other forms of feedback are available to help put learning into practice.  Participants can also take advantage of RAI professional development modules to gain a deeper understanding of the processes involved in reading and best practices for scientifically based reading instruction.
