How RAI Can Help You — Parent Outreach

Research has shown that when parents are involved in their children’s learning there is a positive effect on school performance resulting in higher academic achievement (McNeal, 1999; Scribner, Young, & Pedroza, 1999; Sui-Chu & Willms, 1996; Trusty, 1998; Yan & Lin, 2002). All too often parents are desperately seeking ways to involve themselves in the learning process, but are at a loss as to just what to do. Parent ASSIST helps to bridge this gap by providing parents of elementary school children with an understanding of:

WHAT their children need to know to be successful readers,
WHY these skills are important, and
HOW they can provide meaningful and engaging support at home to improve these critical skills.

Sessions are:
• informative
• research-based
• interactive
• hands-on
• lively

All sessions provide parents with games and resources they can take home and immediately use with their children.

Parent ASSIST modules are organized into four ninety minute sessions as follows:

• Dialogic Reading: Parents learn how to make the most out of reading aloud
  to their preschool children.
• Module 1: Building Blocks for Reading Success: Parents learn games and
activities to promote letter knowledge and phonemic awareness will be
  presented in this interactive workshop.
• Module 2: Building Blocks for Reading Success: Phonics and Fluency
Parents and caregivers learn to maximize the reading experience by
strengthening word attack skills and helping to build reading fluency.
• Module 3: Building Blocks for Reading Success: Parents and caregivers
learn to provide Vocabulary and Comprehension skills through interactive reading.
• Module 4: Reading and Writing: Working Together: Parents and caregivers
learn strategies to identify and state the main idea, take notes, and write a
summary of what has been read.

These modules are sometimes made available to schools through funding provided by foundations and corporate grants. RAI is also able to provide these sessions to interested groups. Please call to discuss dates and fees.

“You have been so instrumental in helping our children become the successes that they are. And by the way, not just successful in material things. But in the way that matters most-having self confidence in their own abilities. Keep up the good work. The world is a much better place because of what you do.”
