Become a Volunteer Tutor — Your Role & Responsibilities

ELEMENTARY INTERVENTION PROGRAM
Volunteers in the Elementary Intervention Program are required to take a 36 hour RAPS (Reading ASSIST for Primary Students) Intervention course teaching a multisensory phonics based program. After training, volunteers tutor in an elementary school on a team.  A typical team consists of three to four volunteers. Volunteers tutor three sessions on their assigned day with each session lasting from 30 – 45 minutes. Each volunteer communicates what lesson was tutored that day to the next volunteer.  With a team of four volunteers, each tutor would facilitate every fourth lesson.

Struggling readers are placed into the volunteer program at the recommendation of the school.  Volunteers have their own mentor who assists them with the program and who will also observe tutoring sessions at the assigned school.   The mentor provides guidance and support on how to adapt the basic program to meet the needs of individual students.
